Bellator Fighting Championships (Bellator) is a mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion based in the United States. "Bellator", which is Latin for "Warrior", organizes its events into seasons with each event hosting the rounds of championship knockout tournaments for three-five weight divisions.[2]
Bellator broadcasts its fights nationally in the United States through an exclusive television agreement with ESPN Deportes. Bellator will also be broadcast to countries around the world through a collection of broadcast agreements. Due to its success in its first season, Bellator returned for a second season on April 8, 2010 with a bigger audience on NBC, FOX Sports Net, Telemundo[3], Mun2[4] and The Score.[5] CEO Bjorn Rebney has also said he would like to get it on pay-per-view.[6] On December 3, 2010, it was announced that Bellator had secured a TV deal to air their events live on the FX channel beginning in 2011,[7] but the deal fell through and on December 14th, 2010, Bellator will instead be broadcasted live on the MTV2 and Tr3s channels. The deal is for three years and it begun airing Bellator's fourth season in March 2011.[8] Bellator Season 5 will begin on September 10 with the eight man welterweight tournament in Atlantic City, NJ. Bellator employs Zuffa's rules, with one minor alteration for the first two rounds of the tournament, where elbows to the head are not allowed. Unlike most promotions which use a polygonal cage, Bellator Fighting Championships use a circular cage.
In the first season each tournament winner would be able to earn up to $175,000 for three wins. Fighters eliminated from tournament competition would also be compensated, with opening-round winners receiving $25,000, semifinalists getting $50,000, and finalists netting $100,000. Non-tournament bouts and female fights were also promoted in the first season.[10]
For the second season Bellator changed the accumulated winnings from $175,000 to $100,000.
For its Tournaments, Bellator currently uses eight weight classes under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts:
